Ghana : Situation Report on Cholera Outbreak 1 November 2016

I. Key Highlights

  • Seventeen (17) new cases of cholera have been reported from Cape Coast on 1 November 2016, bringing the cumulative number of cases to 157 since the outbreak emerged on 21 October 2016.
  • The Deputy Minister of Health, the WHO Representative, the Director General of Ghana Health Service, and the Director of Public Health visited Cape Coast on 1 November 2016 to conduct on-thespot assessment of the cholera situation and provide guidance and morale support to the response team.
  • The Deputy Minister’s entourage paid a courtesy call to the Regional Minister of Central region, accompanied by the Regional Chief Director, Regional Director of Health, Mayor of Cape Coast Metropolitan and other government officials. The joint team subsequently visited two cholera treatment centres at the University of Cape Coast and Cape Coast Teaching hospitals. The mission also visited Abura peri-urban community, the epi-centre of the cholera outbreak, and witnessed the appalling environmental sanitation and living conditions – favourable risk exposure factors accounting for the high transmission potential being observed.

 II. Situation update

  • The outbreak of cholera in Cape Coast Metropolitan, Central region is exhibiting an early indication of declining, with 10 new cases reported on 2 November 2016. The total caseload stands at 172 with zero death. Five (5) historical cases that were registered in one health facility the previous day have been added to the line list, thus responsible for the additional 5 cases. The outbreak is still largely circumscribed to Cape Coast Metropolis, though 2 other districts at the periphery of the Metropolitan have reported a total of three cholera cases (two from one district and one from the other).
