Cholera Outbreaks in Central and West Africa : 2016 Regional Update - Week 04

Highlights at the end of January 2016

· DRC reported in week 3 and 4 respectively 460 cases incl. 3 deaths and 271 cases incl.2 deaths (CFR <1%). For these weeks, data from the South Kivu province does not seem to be comprehensive although this province is severely affected by cholera. In the former Katanga province, the rapid increase observed in the past weeks appears to slow down a little in week 4. However, cholera outbreaks remain high and above the average value of weekly incidence cases at the same time in the previous years (2009-2015) (see the box, back page, with cholera alerts for more details).

· Benin : Cholera alert in Benin with one confirmed case reported ; isolated case in So Ava commune on Feb 7th

· The overall cholera epidemiological situation in West and central Africa (see graph) remains lower than in the previous years; this statement is made carefully as surveillance, early detection and early response capacities are limited in most WCA countries (read the box, back page, on the vigilance to maintain due to the lack of reporting from Nigeria).
