Cholera Outbreaks in Central and West Africa: 2022 Regional Update - Week 1 - 26
Highlights
¨ The West and Central Africa region recorded from week 1 to week 26 a total of 19,693 cholera cases with 355 deaths and a case fatality rate of 1.8%, reported in seven countries (Benin, Burkina, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia and Nigeria).
¨ The Lake Chad Basin is the most affected with 11,577 cases and 240 deaths representing 59% of cases and 68% of deaths reported in the region.
¨ Cameroon remains the most affected country with 9,042 cases and 158 deaths reported since January 2022, representing 46% of cases and 45% of deaths in the region. DRC follows with 7,389 cases and 115 deaths, representing 38% of cases and 32% of deaths in the region.
¨ Notification of a confirmed case of cholera in Burkina Faso on 01 July 2022, the patient a Niger citizen had stayed in Makolondi in Niger before testing positive in the health district of Kanchari in Burkina. However, no epidemiological link has yet been established as there is no ongoing epidemic in Niger.

¨ La région de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre a enregistré de la semaine 1 à la semaine 26 au total 19,693 cas de choléra dont 355 décès et un taux de létalité de 1,8%, notifiés dans sept pays (Benin, Burkina, Cameroun, République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia et Nigeria).
¨ Le bassin du lac Tchad est le plus affecté avec 11,577 cas et 240 décès représentant 59% des cas et 68% des décès notifiés dans la région.
¨ Le Cameroun reste le pays le plus touché avec 9,042 cas et 158 décès notifiés depuis janvier 2022, soit 46% des cas et 45% des décès de la région. Suivi de la RDC avec 7,389 cas et 115 décès, soit 38% cas et 32% des décès de la région.
¨ Notification d’un cas confirmé de choléra au Burkina Faso le 01 juillet 2022, le patient de nationalité nigérienne aurait séjourné à Makolondi au Niger avant d’être testé positif dans le district sanitaire de Kanchari au Burkina Faso. However, no epidemiological link has yet been established as there is currently no officially declared cholera epidemic in Niger.
