Cholera Outbreaks in Central and West Africa: 2022 Regional Update - Week 1 - 30

Highlights

¨ The West and Central Africa region has recorded from week 1 to week 30 about 22,000 cholera cases with 415 deaths and a case fatality rate of 2%, reported in seven countries (Benin, Burkina, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia and Nigeria).

¨ The Lake Chad Basin is the most affected with 13,425 cases and 288 deaths representing 61% of cases and 69% of deaths reported in the region.

¨ Cameroon remains the most affected country with 9,580 cases and 173 deaths reported since January 2022, representing 44% of cases and 42% of deaths in the region.

¨ In Nigeria, the epidemic continues to spread with very active outbreaks in Borno, Kano and Katsina. A total of 31 states out of 36 in the country have noticed at least a cholera case since January 2022.

¨ La région de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre a enregistré de la semaine 1 à la semaine 30 environ 22,000 cas de choléra dont 415 décès et un taux de létalité de 2%, notifiés dans sept pays (Benin, Burkina, Cameroun, République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia et Nigeria).

¨ Le bassin du lac Tchad est le plus affecté avec 13,425 cas et 288 décès représentant 61% des cas et 69% des décès notifiés dans la région.

¨ Le Cameroun reste le pays le plus touché avec 9,580 cas et 173 décès notifiés depuis janvier 2022, soit 44% des cas et 42% des décès de la région.

¨ Au Nigeria la propagation de l’épidémie se poursuit avec des foyers très actifs comme Borno, Kano et Katsina. Au total 31 Etats sur 36 que compte le pays, ont notifié au moins un cas de choléra depuis janvier2022.
